NFS mounting issue with ZFS snapshot/clone..."operation no applicable to datasets of this type"

We're trying to take a snapshot of a ZFS dataset that was part of a KVM zone
running on SmartOS and attaching/mounting this ZFS dataset on an NFS server.
This ZFS dataset was only a data storage dataset, not an OS boot dataset.
We have previously been able to snapshot/clone this type of ZFS dataset to
another KVM on a zone with no problems. It seemed to be a no brainer to
mount this same type of snapshot to an NFS server, but we are receiving the
error message above.

Has anyone seen this message before or have some thoughts about what is
going wrong?

Kind regards, Marc

What commands are you running to get the error?
