Today we announce OpenZFS: the truly open source successor to the ZFS
project.

ZFS is the world's most advanced filesystem, in active development for over
a decade. Recent development has continued in the open, and OpenZFS is the
new formal name for this open community of developers, users, and companies
improving, using, and building on ZFS. Founded by members of the Linux,
FreeBSD, Mac OS X, and illumos communities, the OpenZFS community brings
together over a hundred software developers from these platforms.

You can read more about OpenZFS at our website:
http://open-zfs.org (don't forget the dash!)

The OpenZFS community's goals are:

1. To raise awareness of the quality, utility, and availability of OpenZFS
by consolidating documentation for developers and sysadmins alike, and by
engaging with the larger tech community through conferences, meetups, and
online interactions.

2. To encourage open communication about ongoing efforts to improve open
source OpenZFS, by creating a collaborative website and a mailing list to
discuss OpenZFS code changes.

3. To ensure consistent reliability, functionality, and performance of all
distributions of OpenZFS by making it easier to share code between
platforms, by creating cross-platform tests, and by encouraging
cross-platform code reviews.

More than a dozen people have helped define the OpenZFS goals and create
the open-zfs.org website, and there are many ways to participate in OpenZFS:

* Use OpenZFS! OpenZFS is available for several operating system
distributions, including FreeBSD, OmniOS (illumos), Debian, Gentoo, PC-BSD,
and Mac OS X.

* If you are making a product based on OpenZFS, you are in good company.
More than a dozen companies are talking about how OpenZFS helps make their
products great. Contact ***@open-zfs.org to get your logo on the
open-zfs.org companies list and our T-shirts.

* Write code for OpenZFS and contribute it to your platform's repo. Join
the ***@open-zfs.org mailing list to stay informed about OpenZFS
projects, and get design help or feedback on your code changes.

* Contribute to the growing body of documentation on the
open-zfs.orgwebsite. Share your experiences with OpenZFS by blogging,
tweeting
(#OpenZFS), and speaking at conferences and user groups.

OpenZFS is the most advanced filesystem in the world. Join the community
and be a part of making it even better.

Neither did I.

I then used the web link. It failed first few times, but eventually gave
me a confirmed page. Haven't seen any confirmation email yet, or
any emails on the list. Waiting in anticipation...

I was successful yesterday, after I edited a copy of the web page to fix it.

I thought there would be a fix on the original site some time later.

They have been, for many many months now. The ZFS Working Group disbanded a long time ago, because we felt that the open ZFS discussion list was meeting all the needs of the working group, and there was no real need for secrecy.

From the first item in the list of goals:
* to raise awareness of the quality, utility, and availability of open
source implementations of ZFS

Has any consideration been given to OpenZFS becoming a set of file
system specifications that an implementation must meet in order to be
branded "OpenZFS" or "OpenZFS compliant"?

i.e. is it likely that a GPL ZFS implementation could eventually be
developed from the ground up using just the information presented on
open-zfs.org or would that be an example of a non-goal?

Going forward, is it necessary to submit code reviews to both the
open-zfs.org lists and ***@illumos or is just either one ok depending on
the nature of the change?

If just one, will the change submission process for illumos accept
reviews that are vetted by developers that are only on the open-zfs.org
list?

For the time being, is IllumOS the canonical source code repository for OpenZFS?
Its "illumos" (all lower case.)

I believe that most of us regard this to be the case. I'm not sure there is a formal statement about what a "canoncial" source code repository means, but for now, most of the ZFS developers are either working on direct forks of illumos (e.g. Delphix, DEY, etc.) or are investing cycles in contributing back upstream (FreeBSD, ZoL). So regardless of any official position, I believe this is the de facto situation at present.
* to raise awareness of the quality, utility, and availability of open source implementations of ZFS
Has any consideration been given to OpenZFS becoming a set of file system specifications that an implementation must meet in order to be branded "OpenZFS" or "OpenZFS compliant"?
i.e. is it likely that a GPL ZFS implementation could eventually be developed from the ground up using just the information presented on open-zfs.org or would that be an example of a non-goal?
I don't speak for everyone, but I imagine that this is a non-goal, from the perspective of the non-trivial effort it would entail to do this, and lack of a commercial incentive to do so. That said, if a commercial entity wanted to fund the work, and direct funding into this community, I see no *theoretical* reason that this couldn't take place.
If just one, will the change submission process for illumos accept reviews that are vetted by developers that are only on the open-zfs.org list?
For *illumos*, this process is vetted by advocates. By common consent, we generally have accepted that certain key developers (Matt Ahrens, George Wilson for example) are the subject matter experts appropriate for a suitable review, and the advocates who accept and integrate a change will generally insist that such an expert code review is done. Technically, we had previously agreed that a member of the ZFS WG needed to vet the work on any of the ZFS core, but it turns out that most (all?) of us prefer to have that work vetted by the most expert engineers we can find, so generally we wind up have the reviews in open (which includes the former ZFS WG members). (And since then the WG disbanded in favor of the open ***@lists.illumos.org list.)

The upshot of this is that the venue is less important than the individual reviewers. A private exchange amongst the key developers is technically sufficient, but we have again by common consent agreed to offer up those reviews for public review. Historically ***@lists.illumos.org has served as the venue for this, and I'd recommend that this continue. If the OpenZFS community wants to move the venue, they are free to do so. The key review criteria (at least for *illumos*) will be unchanged, and the venue has never been a particular concern.

OpenZFS?
As Garrett mentioned, "canonical" is not very well-defined. I would say
that right now a lot of commits are pulled from illumos into FreeBSD and
Linux. We would like to encourage more code sharing in other directions as
well, while of course respecting the processes of all the repo's involved.

If someone wants to do that, more power to them, but that is not a goal of
OpenZFS.

I agree with Garrett's explanation that if push comes to shove, what
matters is that it was reviewed by the right people, rather than in a
particular venue. That said, I expect that reviews will continue to happen
on ***@list.illumos.org, with cc: to ***@open-zfs.org for non-trivial
changes that should be able to be ported to other platforms.

I don't see NetBSD being mentioned.
Could you comment on that?
I think "we" (for some value of "we") simply aren't aware of any use by NetBSD of ZFS. IMO, this represents two things:

a) Simple ignorance on our part. (And indeed there are many more people using ZFS technology in products and distributions than I think anyone is aware. Its becoming quite pervasive.)

b) Lack of any interaction *back* from the NetBSD team (if they are indeed using ZFS). Whereas the FreeBSD and ZoL teams have been frequent contributors to discussion and code, I can't recall seeing anything that I could at least personally identify as a contribution or discussion coming from any form of NetBSD. Has anyone else seen anything else?

Indeed, it seems (if the website is to be believed) that the ZFS on NetBSD project is still a work in progress, and quite likely the folks behind it are simply too busy getting the port finished to spend much effort collaborating or contributing upstream. This is according to http://wiki.netbsd.org/users/haad/porting_zfs/

My understanding is that NetBSD ZFS team members, as well as similar efforts on any other platforms -- would be welcome to join this community, as it has indeed been structured as an *open* community. Maybe someone can reach out to the folks behind the NetBSD effort (assuming that Matt or someone else hasn't already done so?)

I don't know that anyone is working on ZFS on NetBSD -- there haven't been
any real updates to the code in several years. But I'd be thrilled to hear
news to the contrary and welcome them into the OpenZFS community.

Has anyone successfully subscribed to the open-zfs.org mailing list yet?

I have attempted to subscribe several times, but have yet to even get a
confirmation that I attempted to subscribe.

I'm trying to determine if this is a "Just me" thing, or if everyone is having
problems.

Thank you,

Jerry

Today we announce OpenZFS: the truly open source successor to the ZFS
project.
ZFS is the world's most advanced filesystem, in active development for over
a decade. Recent development has continued in the open, and OpenZFS is the
new formal name for this open community of developers, users, and companies
improving, using, and building on ZFS. Founded by members of the Linux,
FreeBSD, Mac OS X, and illumos communities, the OpenZFS community brings
together over a hundred software developers from these platforms.
http://open-zfs.org (don't forget the dash!)
* Use OpenZFS! OpenZFS is available for several operating system
distributions, including FreeBSD, OmniOS (illumos), Debian, Gentoo, PC-BSD,
and Mac OS X.
* If you are making a product based on OpenZFS, you are in good company.
More than a dozen companies are talking about how OpenZFS helps make their
open-zfs.org companies list and our T-shirts.
* Write code for OpenZFS and contribute it to your platform's repo. Join
projects, and get design help or feedback on your code changes.
* Contribute to the growing body of documentation on the
open-zfs.orgwebsite. Share your experiences with OpenZFS by blogging,
tweeting
(#OpenZFS), and speaking at conferences and user groups.
OpenZFS is the most advanced filesystem in the world. Join the community
and be a part of making it even better.
